The following are
the themes and activities we focused on at our camp this year. It was really a great
year at camp!
Theme: Heroes of the Heart (Super Heroes)
Monday: Wonder Women
Destiny speaker (spiritual focus) - We had a panel of women of
different ages and walks of life come and do a readers theater about their life. We had a
single sister, a newly married, and Mother of small children who had a difficult time
conceiving, and a Mother of teenage/grown children. After the skit, the YW were allowed to
ask them questions. It was very successful and the yw learned that life doesn't always
turn out the way you think it will, but that is you stay close to the Lord, you can be
happy regardless.
Tuesday: The Hero Within - One of our Bishops spoke about our own
"super powers" which is free agency. He referred to the "Crytpnites"
in our lives mainly immorality. He gave an overview of purity and what is, and is not
acceptable. His handout was a small vile of blue liquid labeled "free agency, our
super power".
Wednesday: Super Friends/Super Powers - Our speaker talked about
aspects of friendship with an emphasis on gossiping. She had a scale that she places rocks
in to represent the good and bad aspects of being a good friend. Of course the good
outweighed the bad.
Thursday: Never a Better Hero - the spiritual focus for this day
was on the Savior. The speaker this day told about several heroes is her life ending with
the Savior. She had some of the JC's sing "Never a Better Hero".
Friday: Go The Distance - All week the YW had been learning the
song "Go the Distance" from Disney's Hercules'. We closed our camp with the idea
to go home and go the distance.
Opening Ceremonies Campfire- the JC's did a "super hero"
themed skit to introduce themselves to the other campers. We read several stories about
heroes, and played super hero bingo.
Heart to Heart - this is an activity we have done for several
years. We pair the ward up together, and they do an activity of their choosing.
Before the end of camp each ward has had the opportunity to do an activity with each ward
in the stake. It helps the girls get to know the YW in other wards. The wards take turns
being in charge of the activity.
PJ's Man - Every year, we have a PJ'S
(Prayers, Journals and Scriptures) time at camp. The stake leaders always do a skit or
song to remind everyone how important these things are. This year they did a song/skit
with choreographed steps and everything. It was so cute! At one point in the skit they
said "Don't forget three special thing, you must do every night, If you do them
faithfully your life will turn out right." At this point each of them offered a
suggestion of something you might do before you go to bed like; brush your hair a hundred
times, brush your teeth, paint your nails etc. Then the music from Super Man came on and
out ran PJ'S Man! PJ'S Man was dressed in a Super Man costume, but the "S" on
the chest was covered with "PJS". He(she) corrected the leaders, and told the
girls how important it was to say their prayers, write in their journals and read their
scriptures. He gave each YW a tote bag (with his picture silk screened on the side) to put
their journals and scriptures in to hang on the end of their bed. The girls loved it so
much. PJ'S Man was such a hit, we had him come every evening to visit and remind the YW to
do their PJ'S!
Early Morning Certification Hike - We split our camp in half and
took half one day and half the next. There were several stops along the way to learn
certification things, or read scriptures etc. They hiked back to a lower part of camp and
cooked their own breakfast.
Certification - We had adults teach the classes this year and it
was a big hit. Our certification leaders asked people who were professionals in the
various areas. The last half of the class the JC's worked one on one with the YW to help
them learn the skills and demonstrate it.
Race for Life - At the end of the week, the YW got to use their
certification skills in the Race for Life. There were victims scattered around camp that
they had to find, assess their injuries etc. and transport them back to base. They girls
really enjoyed this.
