"Back to the Future"... celebration of the decades of this century.

Monday was the Roarin' 20's, Tuesday was the Great Depression, Wednesday was the Rock 'n Roll 50's, Thursday was Flower Power (60's and 70's) and Friday was Life in the Fast Lane (80's-90's).
We all dressed for each day in the style of the day and that was a hoot. Each tent of
girls had one of the eras in which they planned an activity, devotional, cheer, and music.
They also selected a female role model to introduce and taught us about their era. They
also planned meals and their skits around their era. It was a great "history"
lesson for them. The following was some of the items on our daily schedule:
Monday: Roaring 20's
Snack bags with snack items introduced in the 20's for the trip up
Set up Camp
First Aid Certification
Night Hike
Tuesday: Depression (The War Years)
WPA (Service day) We made and painted benches to leave at the camp for
others to enjoy
Made survival kits
Breakfast: Oatmeal
Dinner: Soup kitchen: each girl brought a can of soup and dumped it into
a giant pot. We also had loaves of French bread that they tore off and ate
with their hands
Of course this was the day we had our "big water fight" in honor of the War
Wednesday: Rock 'n Roll 50's
We played and danced to songs from the 50's
A couple of our girls taught the rest the lindy which was a big hit for
the rest of our camp.
This was our parents night and the Price is Right came out in the 50's so we had a
big Price is Right Game and 50's trivia game and had a hula-hoop contest.
Thursday: Flower Power
This was our hike day and our camp leader prepared Burma Shave Signs (These were a little
before my time...they were the signs that were put up along the highway as advertisements
to entertain travelers...they would give you a short line and another couple of miles down
the road they would give you more and more until you had the ad) Anyway, she came up with
great signs for the hike.
We hiked quite a ways to the summit of the mountain so that the girls were good and tired
to listen to our speaker. We had the first counselor in our Bishopric talk to the girls
about the past and how they have gotten to where they are. But the theme of his talk was
"Okay...we have made it this far...NOW WHAT?" He talked about optimism for the
future, goal-setting etc. It was very powerful.
We then gave the girls a few minutes to write down their thoughts and feelings about camp,
their lives, their futures etc. and put them in a time capsule. We also included our
favorite camp memories. We found a great spot and buried it with each of the girls finding
a rock to add to the top. We plan on going back one year for girl's camp and opening it
back up.
We also had our testimony this night
Friday; LIFE IN THE FAST LANES
This was the day that we summarized the century and again emphasized the future. We gave
each of the girl's a printed sheet of "This Day in History" for each of their
birthdays and explained to them that they have a special place in history.
Breakfast: Of course it was grab and go (bagels, muffins, etc.)
Lunch: You could stop at McDonald's on the way home.
Each Era also had their own bandanas to represent their time:
Ex.
Depression: Rags
50's: Rock and Roll Music
Life in the Fast Lane: Cars, signs, buses, busy print
Flower Power: Big flowers
Camp
