Scripture Study Guide for "Able to Stand"

Tuesday - Basic Training - What are we fighting for and why?

You beautiful young women live in an ugly world - one that is "ripe with iniquity".  The adversary controls a growing number of people and institutions, and while we know that good will eventually win out we know that the days ahead will not be easy.  It will be a battle that we must be prepared to fight.

D&C 27:15
Ephesians 6:10-12

"In this work there must be commitment.  There must be devotion.  We are engaged in a great eternal struggle that concerns the very souls of the sons and daughters of God.  We are not losing.  We are winning. We will continue to win if we will be faithful and true.  We can do it.  We must do it. We will do it.  There is nothing the Lord has asked us that in faith we cannot accomplish."  - Gordon B. Hinckley (Ensign, May 1990)

Captain Moroni wrote upon the "Title of Liberty"  the words that would inspire an army to fight - even give their lives.  What would you be willing to give for your life?

Alma 46:12-21

Each day, we make choices.  The choices we make determine the freedom we will enjoy to make the next choice.  Sin is bondage.  Obedience is real freedom and we should be willing to fight for the freedom that comes with it.

Peace - not "World Peace" (because we know that it will take Christ returning to accomplish that), but "inner peace" - a clear conscience and the sweet whisperings of the Spirit - should be another think worth fighting for.

The Nephites were fighting for their wives and children.  We should fight everyday for the children we will have someday - fight the adversary who would have us marry outside of the temple, pursue the vain things of the world and lose our way.

Alma 53:17
2 Nephi 2:27-29

Wednesday - "Combat Gear - The Armor of God"

Helaman's warriors had been raised by righteous mothers who taught them the way to salvation.  Because of their upbringing, they possessed qualities that prepared them for battle.

We have also been taught.  We know what kind of young women we should be.  Compare the pieces of armor outlined in the scriptures with the qualities written about Helaman's 2000 warriors.

Armor provides protection.  Satan is looking for the weak spots in your armor.   What quality might you be weakest at?  Set a goal to work on that vulnerable spot.

D&C 27:16-18 (see also Ephesians 6:13-18)
Alma 53:20-21
Alma 56:47-48

What do some people make it and other do not?
Alma 57:20-21
Alma 57:26-27

"We need not become paralyzed with fear of Satan's power.  He can have no power over us unless we permit it.  He is really a coward, and if we stand firm, he will retreat."  - James E. Faust (Nov. 1987 Ensign)

Thursday - Battle Strategies - Winning the Daily War"

While there are large battles to be fought where we will be called to "stand as a witness for Christ", most of our struggle will be a personal one.  If each young woman can gain control of habits and thoughts, and put into practice all that she knows to be true, the adversary will have no power over her, and the Lord can use her as a valiant soldier to accomplish His purposes.

Alma 46:18

In this army, It is better to be a "Private" than a "General".   Private prayer, private scripture study, private acts of service will make a stronger soldier that being a "generally good person".

D&C 93:49
Alma 58:10-11

This story from the battles in the Book of Mormon teaches a very important lesson about what it takes to fight the adversary.  Life is full of struggle and those who have not learned to work hard and long - who choose the easy path because it is "more fun", will find out in the end that others have passed them on the road, and they are very far behind.

Alma 58:25-29
Alma 58:39-40

It takes a "Major" daily effort to keep the commandments of God.  Too much is at stake to "sit idly by" in the Latter-days.

Alma 60:23-23

"You remember the Duke of Wellington was talking of the Battle of Waterloo when he said that it was not that the British soldiers were braver than the French soldiers.   It was just that they were brave 5 minutes longer.  And in our struggles sometimes that's all it takes - to be brave five minutes longer, to try just a little harder, to not give up on ourselves when everything seems to beg for our defeat."   (Paul H. Dunn, Ensign, May 1979)

Alma 61:14

Friday - "Able to Stand - Victory through Christ"

Third Nephi is the beautiful account of the visit of the Savior to his followers on the American continent, ushering in an unprecedented era of Peace after the many wars the nation had been through.  His words of warning and of promise were also written for us.  While their peace did not last, we are promised that when He comes again, He will reign as King of Kings.  We know what the final outcome will be.  Whose side will we be on?

3 Nephi 9:2
3 Nephi 9:13-14
3 Nephi 9:21-22

"There has never been more expected of the faithful in such a short period of time as there is of us… Each day we personally make many decisions that show where our support will go.  The final outcome is certain - the forces of righteousness will finally win.  What remains to be seen is where each of us personally, now and in the future, will stand in this fight - and how tall we will stand."  Ezra Taft Benson
