by: Alice GiffordYe are the Salt of the Earth - Carlos E. Asay said this: "The
word savor is related to how you live, and the word savior is related to how you
serve."
In Matt 5:13 - the Lord charge his disciples to "retain
their savor".
The word "savor" denotes taste, pleasing flavor,
interesting quality, and high repute. Salt that has savor is clean, pure, uncontaminated,
and useful. In this state or condition, salt will preserve, flavor, heal. Salt that has
lost its savor has been contaminated.
When the Lord used the expression, "savor of men,"
he was speaking of those who represent him." _In the Lord's Service_ by Carlos A.
Asay
How do we retain our "savor". By continually
strengthening our own testimonies so that we may share with others. By remaining clean and
pure, and uncontaminated so that others will see "light" rather than
"darkness" in our presence. By continually seeking knowledge so that we will be
"interesting" and the message we give with have a "pleasing flavor" to
those who we teach.
Saviors of Men
"They were set to be a light unto the world, and to be
the saviors of men; and inasmuch as they are not the saviors of men, they are as salt that
has lost its savor". D&C 103:9-10
We are that light - we have the message to be given to all.
If we do not share what we know, we have lost our savor - our usefulness.
How many lives can we "save" by our example????
I've thought so often of the many heroic acts of the youth at Columbine High School. I've
also thought of the youth where I live - they too are heroes each day as they
"save" the spiritual lives of those whom they associate with by sharing the
gospel....by being an example...be retaining their "savor" - when they reach out
to others in friendship and honor their Heavenly Father through their service.
I thought about President Hinckley's recent Missionary
Fireside. Here are a few of the rough notes I took that apply to this lesson
He introduced his talk by telling us this was going to be a
LONG talk...."I'm an old man and I don't know how much longer I'll be alive and I've
got a lot I want to tell you.....I want to say it while I've still got the strength to do
it!" ( He had my attention )
Steps to Missionary Work- Find the Investigators, Teach the
Discussions, Baptize, and Fellowship and Strengthen
Never give up when there is a spark of interest. He shared
the story of a man who was finally baptized after 8 years.
We must put forth more effort-The Power of Example, the
Power of the Spirit - This is the Key
Become a vast army to assist in missionary work. He said
Bishops should have the motto: "Lets all work to "grow" the ward,
even if it isnt proper English"
We need to teach faith, develop an awareness, and engage in
the Service of God.
Pray as Alma of Old. The power lies within each of us. Do
your best, and leave the harvest to the Lord."
"The power lies within each of us".
