Olympics for 100

Contributed by: Shauna Cline (3/21/04)  clineclan1@attbi.com

This is an activity we have planned for a combined ward activity with about 100 youth. It is an activity done In Olympic format with 10 different events.  I will give some info on the general activity then describe the events we did.  Hope this helps.  It is something that can be adapted to fit your needs by changing a few activities if needed.

The first thing is that we are gathering items to donate to a youth organization-a temporary shelter for youth that can’t go home for a night or two for whatever reason. Each youth has to bring one item to donate as their ticket in.  To encourage all to bring something—we told those that don’t bring something have clean up duty.

Theme—Help others win—scripture used was 2 Tim. 4:7—I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

Time—2 hours (to shorten, you could do fewer events)

Food—water bottle for each youth and a Hershey’s chocolate bar with a story as the wrapper (see last item listed for story)

As the youth entered the building, we took their donation item and gave them a water bottle and a necklace (made of cardstock with string—it had 9 squares on it).  There were 10 different colors and 2 different shapes of necklaces to make 20 teams.  Each team sat in a separate pew (easier to get them off to the events this way)  We had a simple opening exercise with instructions.  Each team picked a captain that received a rotation chart so they knew which event to go to.  Then they did the 10 events—2 teams at each event at a time, rotating through all the events.  After each event, they got 1 square colored on their necklace.  At the 10th event, all received the candy bar with the story.

After all the events, they gather for closing exercises.  We had a member of our stake pres. Speak for 5 min. on helping others.

Here is the specific info on the events.  Some events I got off other YW websites and adapted to our needs.  Others we came up with on our own.  Some are physical and some are spiritual but all are fun.

Station 1—Human Bobsled

Object—See who can slide the farthest on the banana slide

What to do—Each youth gets 1 turn to slide.  Once a person has slid, have them stand on the side of the banana slide where they ended.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar (w/story).

Station 2—Meniscus Discus

Object—see which team can go the farthest away from each other before popping the water balloon.

What to do—Split each team in groups of 2.  Give each group a towel.  Have each team line up the groups opposite each other.  Give one group on each team a balloon.  They toss it to the other group on their team.  After the opposite group catches it they toss it back, then take a step back until the balloon is missed.  If time allows, the youth may try again—keeping in mind that there are 10 groups that will visit this event—make sure you’ll have enough balloons to last.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 3—Biathlon Race

Object—See which team gets through the coarse the quickest.

What to do—Line each team up in 2 rows (one for each team).  When you say “go”, each team sends one member at a time through the course and back.  The member then tags the next team member and they go until all have gone through the course.

Course—ride trike through the cones (they must pedal), wade through the kiddie pool, putt the golf ball into the hole—kids size golf club, hop through the rings (floating rings for kids in pool) and hop back to the start line on one foot.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 4—Life Saving Relay

This event has 2 relays.

Relay 1

Object—pass the lifesaver on a kabob stick from the front of the line to the back and back up to the front.

What to do—line up each team in a row.  Give each member a kabob stick which they hold in their mouth.  Give 1 lifesaver to the first person in each team.  When you say “go” each team must pass the lifesaver to next person without using their hands.  Once the lifesaver reaches the last person, they pass it back up through the line the same way. Each team member may have a lifesaver as quantity allows (make sure you save at least 20 for the actual event).

Relay 2

Object—run to the end of the room and back doing the items listed below.

What to do—line up each team in a row. Each member takes a turn running the coarse.  When the first person gets back, they hand of the items to the next person until all have had a turn. Course—put extra large sunglasses on face (the kind you get as souvenirs at an amusement park—found some at the dollar store), put the pie tin on their head, place the paper plate between their knees and swing the dish towel around as they run.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 5—Uphill Slalom

Object—see who can slurp the Jell-O through a straw the fastest.—Jell-O is not set all the way.

What to do—Line 1 team along the right side of the table and the other team on the left side.  Give each member a straw and bowl of Jell-O.  Say “go”.  The first person on each team sucks the Jell-O.  When the first person is done, the second person starts on so on until all have gone.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 6—Race to a safe place

The organization we donated to was called “Safe Place”—thus the name race to a safe place.

Object—bag different items in a brown grocery bag for donation.

What to do—Each team gets 1 bag.  Have them label it for a male or female (depending on what they gather).  Each team will send 1 person at a time to the table and get an item to put in the bag.  While gathering the items, everyone will sing “Because I have been given much”.  When they are done putting the items in the bag, finish singing the song and then explain where the items are going.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 7—Holy Gymnastics

Object—eat a donut off the string without touching it.—powdered donuts are the best.

What to do—Have ˝ of the group lay on their backs on the tarp.  Put a blind fold on the other ˝ of the group.  The blindfolded youth get a stick with the donut.  Stand straddling the stomach of the youth laying down.  The youth laying down directs the blindfolded youth to get the donut to their mouth.  Each youth should get a turn to feed a donut and eat a donut.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 8—Stravilin

This event has 2 activities

Activity 1

Object—to see who can throw a straw the farthest.

What to do—Each person will take a turn throwing a straw as far as they can.

Activity 2

Object—see who can throw a cotton ball the farthest.

What to do-- Each person will take a turn throwing a cotton ball as far as they can.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 9—Speed Relay

Object—see who can answer the questions and spell the words –questions from “Who wants to be a Celestial Heir” and spelling words are funny Book of Mormon names or words.

What to do—Alternate asking each team a question, then ask each team to spell a word.  Tally 1 point for each correct answer.  Make sure everyone gets at least 1 turn to answer.  The person being asked the question or spelling word can ask for help if they do not know.  Use the timer to limit the time for answering.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.

Station 10—Scripture Scurry

Object—have each youth find a scripture

What to do—Line up each team in a row at one end of the gym.  Give the first person in line on each team a “goof ball” (ball with lead weight so it doesn’t roll straight).  Give a scripture reference then say go.  The first person in line has to kick the ball down to the table with the scriptures, find the reference.  You can decided if they read it out loud, or read just the first line—however you feel will work best.  They then kick the ball back to the line.  Give each member a turn. If time allows, they may go more times.

NOTE—Mark of 1 square on each persons necklace as they finish the event.  When the whistle blows, send the group to their next event.  We are on a tight schedule so please send them off as soon as the whistle blows—even if they are not done. For the 10th event, give each youth a candy bar.
