The Salt Lake Olympic Committee (SLOC)
wanted to be certain that the 2002 Winter Olympics did not become the "Mormon
Olympics". We however are under no such constraints. We held our own "Mormon
Olympics" as a combined Young Mens / Young Womens Activity.
We held our usual Opening Exercises
followed by escorting everyone into the Cultural Hall where we had appropriate Olympic
music playing with Olympic Posters on the walls.
Our games were patterned after the game
"Cranium", which incorporates elements of Pictionary, Charades, Wheel of
Fortune, etc. in a very fun game experience. We had a decathalon-like format in which we
pitted Beehives vs. Deacons, MIA Maids vs. Teachers, and Laurels vs. Priests in the first
round. Each team had to solve a question or puzzle or action from each of the following
categories. (Teams competing against each other had the same questions or activities to
keep things fair). At each station the quorum or class had one minute to perform the task
assigned. If they got it right they moved to the next station. If they missed it they had
to wait the full minute before they could move on. For the competition, we had two tables
for each team. Half of the questions were on each table and they would run back and forth
from table to table as they solved each situation.
The second round consisted of the three
YW classes competing against each other. The Young Men then competed against each other. A
bronze, silver and gold medal was then awarded to the appropriate teams. We made medals
from white chocolate (yellow for the gold, white with a little black food coloring for the
silver, and butterscotch for the bronze) in a Salt Lake Temple candy mold.. A paper clip
was embedded in the candy so a ribbon could be attached to the medal so we could hang them
around the winners necks.

We divided the youth into 4 teams
randomly. They were in opening exercises together (first time) and we just made them count
off 1,2,3,4...... Each group was assigned an adult leader. We brought them into the
gym and had 12 table set up in a big circle. Each group had a scorecard that they carried
around with them.
At each table, we had a sign with the name of the game , and another sign that explained
how to play. On the table was an envelope with the cards in
them. There was also anything on the table you would need for that game (blindfold,
scriptures, play-doh, papers and pens) The adult leader explained the rules to that
particular game and then one youth volunteered to do it. They had one minute to do it in.
They did each table twice the first time around. We found they were going through them
pretty quick, so we went around again and did them all twice again. This gave lots of kids
the opportunity to answer things.
The leader kept track of the scores and just rotated. At the end, they tallied scores and
put them on a big chalkboard. It was pretty close. The first place team had 41 while the
lowest score was only 37 so it was close.
