Hand everyone an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper and a pair of scissors. Ask
them to cut out a hole that they can actually climb through. After they
struggle a minute (and fail
miserably unless they have a 9 inch waist!) have a YW show them how it's
done. Take-home message: With the right approach you can
accomplish seemingly impossible things!
How to cut a hole in an 8 1/2 x 11
piece of paper large enough that you can actually step through it: This
is easy, but to explain it sounds complicated. I will be very specific
to make it plain.
1. lay paper in front of you (vertical or portrait mode)
2. fold paper in half, so it is 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 rectangle
3. with the folded edge (now called the BOTTOM) toward you, make about a
4 inch straight line cut - starting about an inch in from the left edge,
stopping about an inch from the top edges.
2. Flip paper over, so the fold (bottom) is now at the top. Make another
4 inch cut 2 inches from the left (an inch from the one you just did,
but in the opposite direction), stopping about an inch from the folded
edge.
5. Continue flipping paper from bottom to top, and making these
alternating straight cuts until you are an inch from the right edge of
the paper.
6. At the folded edge, cut apart the 2 inch sections (right along the
fold line!) to separate all EXCEPT the first section and the last
section (the sections to NOT cut apart are easy to spot as they are only
half as wide as the middle sections).
7. Unfold and step through - it's the size of a hula hoop!
