Hello Sisters!

I loved the idea of doing the lip gloss and using it to remind the girls to speak kind words. Whoever posted it added a cute poem...I guess I stole this idea and ran with it...here is my poem if any of you would like to use it.

YW Lip Gloss - Guaranteed to soften lips--only if you soften your words!

I have this pot of lip gloss,
I'll put some on each day.
I do it to remind me
To choose the words I say.

I'll try to speak with kindness
To everyone I meet.
I'll try to spread some happiness
To those that I may greet.

This pot of gloss reminds me
Of the values I hold dear,
The colors are so cheerful
And the message is so clear.

If I want to live the gospel
I'll choose each word I say.
I'll speak in just the kindest words
And I won't forget to pray!

I wouldn't suggest using film canisters, you don't know what chemical  residue there are in those things:-)

Here are the recipes that I use. (I do soap making and toiletries as a  hobby) Enjoy!

PS If you would like to know where to purchase these items let me know I  will point you the way!

Peppermint Lip Balm
2 Tbsp. petroleum jelly
1 tsp. beeswax
10-14 drops peppermint EO

In a small pot, melt the petroleum jelly, then add beeswax. When melted, remove from heat and add peppermint EO. Pour into a lip pot and cool.

Lip Gloss
2 tsp. beeswax
7 tsp. castor oil or jojoba or sweet almond oil
1 tsp. honey
5 drops of an essential oil such as lemon, peppermint, orange, lime,  tangerine

Melt the oil and beeswax together in a little pan over low heat until the
beeswax is melted.

Take off the stove and then add in your honey and whisk it all together.  When the mixture is nearly cool add in your essential oil, mix it up  again and then pour into your lip balm container.  Since this comes out to be more like a gloss you can always add more  beeswax to it so that it is a little harder. Maybe another 1/2 tsp. would  do it.

Chocolate Lip Gloss
3 Tbsp. Cocoa Butter
4-5 Chocolate Chips
1 capsule, Vit. E

Melt, and blend ingredients with a spoon until smooth, put into a  container and refrigerate until solid.

Luxuriously Luscious lip Balm
3 oz Fractionated Coconut Oil
1/2 oz Beeswax Beads or Grated Beeswax
1 3/4 tsp. Honey
10 drops Lavender
5 Drops Rose Otto

Mix Oil, Wax and Honey together in double boiler (Glass) Stir slowly  until melted, remove from heat stir while cooling about a minute Add  Lavender & Rose, place in containers

Cocoa Butter Lip Balm
2 1/2 oz cocoa butter
2 5/8 oz beeswax (2.6 oz)
1 3/8 oz sweet almond oil (1.4 oz)

Melt together in micro and pour into tubes

Castor Oil Lip Balm
1 1/2 ounces cocoa butter
1 1/2 ounces beeswax
3 ounces castor oil

Melt in micro add oil stir pour into containers

Chocolate Lip Gloss
1.5 tsp. grated cocoa butter
.5 tsp. coconut oil
1/8 tsp. vitamin E oil
1/4 tsp. grated chocolate

I used a bit of a Royale bar for the chocolate and it smells great but  has hardened up completely. However my house is freezing! So my  recommendation would be to use the cocoa butter and coconut oil (both of  which return to their solid state when cool) but add a slight bit more  liquid oil (almond?) or just play with it until you find the right  proportions. Of course the chocolate is optional.

Cocoa Mint Tube Lip Balm
1 1/2 parts cocoa butter
1 1/2 parts grated beeswax
3 parts edible vegetable oil of your choice - straight or combined.  (These work well: Almond, Jojoba, Kukui Nut, Macadamia Nut, Castor)

Melt the cocoa butter slowly and carefully in a microwave, or over a  double boiler on the stove top until melted. Add oil and stir well. Add  Spearmint, Peppermint flavoring oils or both, a few drops at a time, to  taste. Reheat if needed. Pour into tubes. For a softer lip balm, add more oil but don't use a tube, but rather a tub.

Some tips from Cathie: rrelf@attglobal.net

Chocolate Lip Gloss

3 T. cocoa butter
4-5 chocolate chips
1 capsule Vit. E

I found cocoa butter with the Vit. E already in it at the drug store, so I didn't use the capsule. You poke a hole in the gelcap and squeeze out the contents)  melt these ingredients together (I used a small glass custard cup in a  water bath-a small skillet with water in it. Pour into containers. We have a shop here called Storables-they have the perfect size plastic container for lip balms for 50 cents each. This recipe fills 4 of these containers very nicely.

Lip Gloss
Melt: 2 t. grated beeswax (I found mine in small bricks for 69 cents at my health food store) 7 t. castor oil, or almond oil, 1 t. honey.
Melt in small container using a water bath. Mix, pour into containers, let harden.

I also found flavors to put in the lip gloss at www.lavenderlane.com   I found that the initial purchase of ingredients tends to add up rather quickly, but then you have the supplies to make tons of lip gloss/balm.  If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. BTW-this activity went rather quickly, so we also made layered milk shakes and had a planning meeting. Cathie

In our Tuesday night activity we had the girls make lip gloss. It was fun for them to learn how, but it's also a great gift idea. They had a great time and have got all kinds of ideas of how to use it as gifts for Valentine's Day, birthdays, etc. We even did one that was white with the little cake sprinkles that has almost all the value colors as our "Value Gloss" that reminds them that when they're wearing the lip gloss to only speak kind words. I've promised them refills for as long as they want if they'll say kind words to each other.

A few of the girls went in on a jar of coconut oil, the wax and some of the other ingredients in order to make up all their own batches of gloss. Some were two toned, some had crunched peppermint sticks in them for texture, etc. It was fun to see what they could come up with!!!

Here's the recipe for the lip gloss:

Paraffin wax
Coconut Oil
Petroleum Jelly
Candy Melts (to color the gloss and make it taste sweet
Oil-based candy flavoring (if you want a special flavor)
Grater
Wax Paper
Measuring spoons
Plastic bag with seal (sandwich bag or even "snack" size)
Large bowl
Scissors
Container to store gloss in. (We used both the little paint containers from the craft store - 6 or 8 on a row which we cut for each of the girls - and some of the bigger ones that they could decorate with markers)

Grate paraffin wax onto wax paper. Measure 1/4 tsp. into the plastic bag.

Add:

1 tsp. coconut oil
1 tsp. petroleum jelly
1 candy melt
1/8 tsp. of the flavoring of your choice

Seal the bag. Carefully put it in a bowl of hot tap water to melt the ingredients (3-5 minutes). Change the water if it cools. (Use only
hot tap water. Never use a microwave or stove to heat.)

Remove the bag from water and squish ingredients around in the bag to mix (the girls love this part... but you have to work quickly!)

Clip off a tiny corner of the bag and squeeze the gloss into your containers. Let it set for about an hour, or we put it in the fridge
for about 15 minutes.

Lip Balm:

2 1/2 oz. Beeswax
1 Cup Sweet Almond Oil
1 - 2 T. Honey

Put ingredients in a double boiler (I just used a wide mouth 1/2 quart jar in a small pot of boiling water) and heat until melted. Pour into containers and let cool until solid. (The first time we tried this, the honey separated out on some. I have since read somewhere that before you pour into your containers, let it cool a bit and keep stirring. We will try that tonight and hopefully that will work. Even with the honey separated out on the bottom, it was still good
lip balm.)

Some suggested containers are: Prescriptions bottles, those containers with toys in them that you get out of bubble-gum machines, etc.

Another great place to check is with your pharmacy, for clean unused pill bottle containers! I did an achievement day when I was in primary and the girls made lip gloss and I used the plastic containers that you sometimes get at restaurant with ranch dip, or nacho cheese dip (frosted white color with a lid). These worked well because they were big enough to mix in and big enough for the girls to get their fingers into.

If this isn't enough info - check out the archives at LDSCN. Using the Pull-down button go to YW List - and then enter the words "lip gloss".
