We have 20 hat looms in our YW. The ones we have are look like a giant lifesaver. They are hard plastic and have spikes that stick up on the top. The spikes go all around the loom. The girls use yarn and weave in and out and make baby hats. The ones we make are for newborns, but there are larger looms that can make knitted stocking hats (like you would wear in the snow).

We use our looms for the preemies that are born at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. They have 16,000 babies a year born there and each baby needs two hats. They love the ones we weave as they are durable and can be washed. We have also made stockinette hats that are made from the stretchy fabric one uses under a cast. These are pretty much one time use, but are very useful to keep the baby's head warm.

Our Stake has made these for the hospital for quite some time. It is a great service project. As a matter of fact, we are getting ready to go to the hospital with the Laurels for a "tour" of the nurseries (they have five large nurseries). It is great to see the girls as they look at all of these babies (many have serious problems).

(Where can you go to purchase?  Try these °Ü°

A lady in Provo sells them. Her company is "In the Attic." Her name is Nicole Clark. Her phone number is 801-373-5958. I know she ships them all over the country. Hers are plastic, so very durable.

Is looming better or knitting?

Both

Looms would be better because the yarn doesn't slip off and unravel. Better because you can pick it up and put it down at a moment's notice. Looms are so easy! We did it for FHE once and my husband and 22-year old son both made a hat.

Teaching knitting would be better because it teaches a skill. Knitting needles would be less expensive than a loom for an initial inveestment.

My mother, who is an avid and experienced knitter, likes using the loom while she watches TV.

Either way, if you are donating the hats you are performing a great service. My BYU daughter calls them "beanies" and says they are very much in style.
