EDITOR'S NOTE - You may want to change the
flight number as I have been contacted by a family member of victims of
an actual flight 409 plane crash from 1955 who were concerned about an
activity depicting an actual tragedy.
Invitations were those jackets for airline tickets donated by the
airlines. Everyone was invited to join a trip to "Paradise" with
everything written like reservations. (departure date etc.)
We took the church hallway because it was dark. We had ovals like
windows inside the plane on the walls with two chairs on each side with
a center aisle. The only lights we had were little clear Christmas
lights strung down each side of the plane. We had black lights
displaying "Exit" signs that were done on fluorescent paper.
A real pilot (could just get a costume) came and welcomed us aboard the
flight wearing his uniform. We were told that it would be a long trip
over the water, so sit back and relax as now that we were" boarded", our
affairs "were in order." The Young Women were the stewardesses. I
forgot: each one had to pack five earthly belongings that they would
grab as their prize possessions in their suitcases - "no children
allowed" was added for humor. and give it to the Young men who were the
baggage claims officers and ticket reps at the "ticket counter".
They turned them in there and boarded. Music started, the stewardesses
did the usual thing, (we had "barf bags" taped to the backs of the
chairs, and the church folders from the distribution center on the Plan
of Salvation for reading materials. We started the recorded engine
sounds and used some subwoofers to feel the bounce and took off. We
started a church movie, I can't remember what one, and had the
stewardesses pass out peanuts to get everyone thirsty. Then the
lightning and storm sounds recorded from the college
thrown in with engine sounds we had a may day with terrifying
instructions from the pilot.
We all put our heads down and prepared for a crash. As there were no
survivors, we walked through mist (fire extinguishers sprayed) to our
first room.
It looked barren. There were paper cups and warm water to drink in the
Telestial kingdom. The guide, in all white read from a silver book,
telling of the promises to those who were in the Telestial. We were
given the choice to stay.
We all left for the terrestrial. There were some green plants and some
appetizers as our heavenly guide told us of our rewards.
We moved on to a room where we had taken white rolls of kitchen bags
without tearing them apart and looped them in a tent fashion with white
lights and white columns covered in vines & tiny white lights, with
fresh flowers, silk trees with tiny lights, and all the polished silver
and gold ware with white parchment scrolls with gold ribbons, and gold
calligraphy saying "Well done, thy good and faithful servant".
Everyone sat in silence with the portrait of Christ hugging the man
coming home" to reflect on. All around the room were framed pictures of
different families and the Savior. It was quite breathtaking especially
because it was such stark reality.
We moved out of the Celestial reception room and into the cultural hall
that was decorated like paradise with every green silk plant every
sister had. We put vines along the tables along with those tissue paper
flowers that look so real. Christmas lights (tiny ones) were wrapped
throughout the vines with large watermelon fresh fruit boats, and family
picture frames were dispersed through as well. It looked like a feast in
paradise while those stark images remained fresh on all of our minds. We
showed what we brought as we ate.
It was then time to celebrate our good works. We had authentic dancers
for entertainment. It was wonderful! Everyone left through the
"Celestial" realm. It was great! The crash was the big surprise which
made it fun! No one expected that part!
