Fashion Follies
A Successful Experience

Submitted by: Heidi in CA vanwoerkom@rcsis.com

Just wanted to share a successful activity we had last night with the YW and their mothers using an idea I saw on the list--the Fashion Follies. First we had the leaders put on the fashion show of "don'ts" (spaghetti noodles on the shoulders for spaghetti straps, picture of an army tank taped to a shirt for a tank top, etc.) The girls thought it was hilarious to see the leaders being silly.

Then I taught a mini-lesson about modesty based on the "For the Strength of Youth" pamphlet and an excellent story in the Sept. 1990 New Era called "The Strapless Dress."

After that we drove to Wal-Mart. The instruction we gave was that the mom got to pick out a modest outfit for the daughter and the daughter got to pick one for mom. We then videotaped each outfit as they came out of the dressing room (with Wal-Mart's prior approval). All the outfits were stylish AND modest! Then we went back to the church to have refreshments and watch the video. The girls (and moms) seemed to have a great time and hopefully got the message mixed in with the fun!

Mini lesson: I just did this last week and we had a lot of fun with it. A little bit differently. I told a true story of when I was at a huge affair on the beach and I was the only girl who had on a one piece bathing suit. Decided not to worry about it-felt I was on the Lords side.

Then each girl got the first line (or catchy line) in each of the paragraphs for the dress code in FTSY. As they put it up I read the rest of the paragraph.

Activity: I divided them into three groups (we have a small YW) each girl picked a paper that said what her outfit would be. I actually rigged it so each group would have a bridal outfit, a prom dress and a casual outfit. I had bought tissue paper in white & 2 different colors, and 3 rolls of vibrant wrapping paper, right after Christmas on their clearance so the whole thing cost me less than two dollars.

I divided up the tissue paper into 3 bags, with tape and staplers. (I couldn't get to my trim box bec of all the stuff I collected for our YW garage sale) so at the last minute I decided to throw in some funky stuff: colored comics, cereal boxes (became surf board, purse,) large grocery sacks (roll into a cute sunhat) pipe cleaners etc.

I had earlier put down two long table without legs up and ran a runner down the center. The girls walked down the runway (tables) to the song of Unforgettable by Natalie Cole for the formal clothes and something else for the casual. We really have a problem with prom dresses here so I wanted every group to have to work at making one modest. I also threw in the category of bridesmaid and I'm glad I did, because they were really beautiful and creative.

The evening was a hoot they made corsages, matching gloves and shoes, necklaces etc. It really helped that the tissue
paper was in beautiful colors and the "Temple" wedding dresses where white. At the end I gave each girl a padded hanger to remind her that when she chooses modest clothing she is choosing to be on the Lord's side.
