| Yesterday we talked about the flood and the ark and some of
the more technical stuff. For example, how many days they were in the ark, the high school
my students attend is approximately 460 cubits long and 2 stories high. The ark was
roughly the size of their school PLUS one story. That really helped to put things into
perspective. Today we talked about whether they would
have listened to Noah and all of his warnings. We then listed on the chalkboard some of
the warnings that Gordon B. Hinckley has given them. They quickly listed some of the
obvious: Prepare for the 2nd Coming, Standards, No R-Rated Shows, No dating before 16,
Temple Marriage...
Then we talked about how difficult is to be a prophet. The
incredible weight of being a Seer and knowing what is coming and what we must be doing in
order to prepare. The incredible weight and pressure that they must carry.
Then we talked about how tough it must have been for Noah to
go into the ark and close the door. Once it started to rain people may have come by to see
what Noah was doing. Once the water was a foot deep how people probably began knocking on
the door. At 2 feet they began to pound on the door. At 3 feet deep they were crying and
begging. (I was pounding on the chalkboard to dramatize what was happening, I'm sure the
class next door was wondering what was going on in Bro. Pike's class) At 4 feet deep they
were banging on the door and begging him to just open the door and take their children (I
know it doesn't mention this in the scriptures, but it would be reasonable to say these
things probably happened). And all Noah could say is: I tried to warn you. I tried to tell
you, but you wouldn't listen.
By this time I really had their attention and the Spirit was
very strong within the room. Then I asked about the day they are standing at the
"Pearly Gates" asking to enter into the Celestial Kingdom. Will Pres.
Hinckley be standing there saying: I tried to warn you. I tried to tell you, but you
wouldn't listen. Or will you be able to say I was listening. I did: Prepare
for the 2nd Coming, follow the Standards of the church, I didn't go to R-Rated Shows, etc
(checking off the items that THEY had listed earlier on the board).
The Spirit was so strong and so sweet. All I could do was
bear my testimony and close. For the 1st time in 3 weeks, my kids got out early. But I
know they left with something to think about. I wish I could take credit for how the
lesson went. I had not prepared the lesson that way. Someone else was guiding. And I hope
I am always able to follow the Spirit like I did this morning.
