Chalkboard Testimonies

Contributed by: CJ (7/5/2001)

I just remembered an effective classroom activity that I did several years ago. We were going through a 'dry spell' where none of the girls wanted to bear testimony on Fast Sunday.

One Sabbath, at what would have been testimony time, (with the YW Pres permission), I put on spiritual music and wrote on the top of the
blackboard "I Am Thankful For...." .

I then told the girls that we would not bear testimonies out loud that day, but, if they felt moved to do so, they could come and list something on the board that they were thankful for; they could come up as many times as they wished, but they could only list one thing at a time. I then listed: 'Amy's special laugh'. (Amy was one of our YW who did not come all the time, but was there that day).

The leaders were told in advance and got things rolling. All the girls listed something and many came up to the blackboard several times, writing in a flourish with the colored chalk. The 'quiet time' gave them an opportunity to reflect and the things they listed as being thankful for ranged from bubble baths to Joseph Smith's first prayer. It was a neat 'activity' that we did once in a while on Fast Sunday.
