To introduce
the YW in our ward with the new theme we started with blindfolding the
girls and having them hold on to the stair rod to the topmost room in
our old building (we have many added on levels). In the topmost room we
had a fake tree with twinkle lights to be the Tree of Life (and light)
We had made mints using the Salt Lake temple mold that were plastic
wrapped and hung on the tree. One of our advisors told of a time in
high school where she had been pressured by a teacher to watch an R
rated movie as a requirement for her grade. She told how she stood up
for her standards. We talked about being a light to the world and being
a good example. Then we returned to our YW room where we had yellow
fabric cut into 12x15 inch flags. The girls wrote the scripture on
their flags. (The fabric was thin enough that you could see the
scripture written on paper behind it. I had several choices of fonts in
large print for them to trace.) The flag was hot glued to an 18 inch
long dowel. We had spray painted empty soup cans and filled the cans
with dried beans - that keeps the flag standing in place. The YW were
encouraged to keep their flags out in their rooms for the whole year.
